From Chantilly (Cub Run RECenter woods) and home (S. of Reston) today Friday 05
May, here are the migrating birds - omitting the summer resident regulars.
Cub Run:
Black-billed Cuckoo - 1
Cedar Waxwing - 1
Black-and-white Warbler - F
American Redstart - M
Yellow-rumped Warbler - 3
Rose-breasted Grosbeak - F
The Cuckoo was noticeably small in size, all-black bill, red orbital eye ring.
I have only ever seen a Black-billed twice in my life - both in this general
part of the county, both during late April / early May. Last year I returned
several times to the site of my first one, and could not re-locate it for the
Virginia Breeding Bird Atlas. It was probably passing through during migration.
South of Reston:
Swainson's Thrush - 1
Black-and-white Warbler - M
Scarlet Tanager - M
Rose-breasted Grosbeak - F
We also re-confirmed Hairy Woodpecker at our home, carrying food today.
Doesn't help the Atlas any, because we had them here last year too.
