[va-bird] nature notes, including turkey gobbling!--western Albemarle

This morning's bird chorus was delightful.  All the birds seemed full of 
energy on this chilly June morning in the upper 40s (goodness!!!!!).  The most 
surprising occurrence was hearing a turkey start gobbling at 5:44 AM, right 
after I'd told my hubby that it felt like the right temp to hear a turkey!  
Guess I was right as it continued until 6:10 AM.

Another item of surprise that I thought folks might find of interest:

I keep notes every day about every kind of wildlife around my house. Because 
today was the first day of June, I needed to get out a different book for this 
month.  When I went to put away my May book, I noticed--for some reason--a 
book with my notes from the 80s when I lived in Ivy (near Charlottesville). I 
decided to peek into it. 

The page I happened to open to contained notes from May 3 to May 7, 1984.  
Imagine my surprise to read that there were 8 female and 5 male Evening 
Grosbeaks at my feeders on MAY 4!!!!  My first reaction was, "What?!!!!!"  
Then I saw there was even a Pine Siskin!  This on a day when I also had a 
Rose-breasted Grosbeak and an Indigo Bunting at the feeders!!!!  Amazing!  
And the Evening Grosbeaks and siskins were around for several more days after 
that.

I'd love to hear from anyone who was keeping notes back then who has time to 
look up May of 1984 to see if this kind of thing was going on across Virginia. 
 If you write, please include where you live.  


These notes were also fascinating to look at because there hasn't been Evening 
Grosbeaks where I now live (and have for over 34 years) for more than two 
decades.  It almost seems hard to believe we ever used to even get Evening 
Grosbeaks in Virginia.
