Great visit this afternoon and evening to Kings
Highway side of Huntley Meadows with some of my
Field Natural history/Ornithology students.
Highlights were the following:
1. Peregrine Falcon trying to catch a
green-winged teal who dove underwater several
times in the nick-of-time to escape. After
swerving towards several duck flocks and
pestering this teal a few times the peregrine
took off over the trese down barnyard run.
2. Good numbers of green-winged teal, shovellers,
and pintails, as well as a couple coots and a
pied billed grebe. Two male blue-winged teals
flew in around 6:45.
3. 10 fox sparrows in the first burnt field near
the entrance road and several others as we
watched the excellent display by three woodcocks
in the burned "woodcock meadow" down near the
marsh.
4. Lots of singing spring peepers, leopard frogs,
wood frogs and my first singing american toads of
the year.
5. Hooting barred owl heard as bats flitted by.
6. Nice view of the Orion nebula through the
birding scope.
7. Adult Bald eagle flew over from west to east
without stopping.
8. Two pine warblers singing and feeding on
insects.
Wonderful evening despite the sounds of sirens
and airplanes.
