On Friday I was in King William County at a private farm before the railroad
tracks by The Pocket (Pamunkey River, Pamunkey Indian reservation). Feeding
with a flock of about 1600 Canada Geese and 1 Cackling Goose in the field was a
small white goose that I at first thought was a Ross's but as I studied it
further, the head and beak shape and proportions looked like something between
a Ross's Goose and a Snow Goose. So I snapped several photos, 4 of which I
cropped heavily and posted at this FLickr site. There is also a photo of the
Cackling Goose here. I would appreciate any feedback from people with
experience with Ross's Goose and Ross's X Snow hybrids. You can read my
observations under the photos. This flock is often visible from the road edge,
and it also visits the Pocket and other nearby fields. Please do not enter the
farm.
