Hello,
Earlier this week, as I came to the end of the road leading to my house,
I observed four red-header woodpeckers going back and forth from the
ground to a large oak tree. They performed a sortie for several minutes
and were raucous along the tree's trunk thereafter. I had seen a few in
the spring a mile back on our dirt road, which passes between two ponds.
One of these ponds has a few standing dead trees that likely housed
their nests. I hope the four I saw near my house are staking out winter
territory, though I doubt it since this species usually does this in
September. Probably just dispersal.
Other birds seen on or near my property lately include:
Resident swifts, barn swallows, thrashers, phoebes, chipping sparrows,
grasshopper sparrows, northern orioles, red-shouldered hawks, indigo
buntings, bluebirds, red-eyed vireos, common yellowthroats, and
meadowlarks.
Anyhow, since my daughter Phoebe is finally showing some interest in
birds, and my four baby boys are more manageable, I may get to do more
birding this fall. I'll post what I see out here in my undeveloped part
of western Loudoun.
