While walking east of the Lesner Bridge August 27, 2007 I saw a mixed flock of
shorebirds. There were 58 SEMIPALMATED PLOVERS, one SANDERLING and one LEAST
SANDPIPER resting on the beach about 9 AM. Later around 7 PM I saw 2 BLACK
SKIMMERS 20-50 yards offshore west of the fishing pier at Lynnhaven Fish House.
Thirty years ago, seeing these birds here wouldn't have been unusual as I
regularly saw shorebirds along this section of beach. But today it is rare to
see any shorebirds (even sanderlings) here. Luckily, I do still regularly see
shorebirds at Lynnhaven Inlet.
