On Monday July 19, I spent about an hour at dusk
at The Pocket along the Pamunkey River in King
William County in the middle peninsula. This is
near the Pamunkey Indian reservation at
Powhatan's gravesite. The 3 tricolored herons
and 1 adult little blue heron were my first for
the county and the peninsula. They flew in
together from New Kent County and roosted for the
night in some lily pads in the middle of the
river. Meanwhile 34 great egrets were flying
east to an unknown roosting spot and 250-300
mixed swallows were also flying east. Most of the
identified swallows were tree swallows but there
were also good numbers of martins and barn
swallows and a few rough-winged swallows. I saw
no definite bank swallows or cliff swallows, but
light was bad and the birds were moving along a
broad front pretty quickly. I wonder if they were
going to roost, and if so, where. There were
about 20 swifts mixed in. A lesser yellowlegs, 1
wood duck, 3 green herons, and 1 great blue heron
were also present.
