VIRGIL CAINE UPDATE- Sept. 8, 2008
The Golden Eagle that was trapped and fitted on March 17th with a telemetry
unit in Highland County has spent the summer in the province of Quebec, Canada.
In early June, Virgil Caine was in northern Maine, near the Quebec border.
Mid-June, she headed north to the area where Maine, Quebec and New Brunswick
meet. Early in the month of July, she travelled back and forth on the Gaspe
Peninsula, but then headed slightly wsw back to the border with New Brunswick,
where she spent the rest of the month. In August she moved slowly south back
into Maine along the Maine/Quebec border. As of Sept 5, she was in this
general area (Jackman, Maine is the closest small town).
The Gaspe Peninsula is the extreme continental limit of the ancient Appalachian
Mountains. This chain of mountains stretches from northern Alabama for about
1,500 miles to the tip of the peninsula. The native peoples, The Mi'kmaq,
called this land 'Gespeq', which translates as "the place where the land ends".
