I had planned to join the Huntley Meadows walk this morning (thanks to all who
let me know where and when), but when I arrived at 6:00, it started pouring.
Between glasses and hearing aids, slogging about in the rain is not pleasant.
So, I decided maybe I would do a sit under the parking lot pavilion at
Occoquan.
Arrived at Occoquan about 7:00, and the rain was lightening. Sat under the
pavilion for a while listening to a couple of Yellow Warblers, several Common
Yellowthroats, and a Chat. A flock of Cedar Waxwings (15-20) was in the cherry
trees. The rain turned to drizzle, so I walked the Fox Rd, Painted Turtle Pond,
Lake Dr. loop. Took a drive out the back, I saw 3 W. Turkeys (one on Locust Rd
and two more on Charlie just past the marsh), and back in again, where I had a
nice open view of a Prairie W. in the big cedar tree on the left. Rain stopped
around 10:00 and so I walked down Easy Road. Other highlights, a Green Heron at
Painted Turtle Pond; a pair of Blue Grosbeak and two E. Meadowlarks in the
field behind the parking lot (see from Bayview Rd 2/3 to Easy Rd); and a
singing Nashville W. along Easy Rd (Bayview end). As I exited the park ~
11:40, I saw a group of three W. Turkeys in the
middle of the field left of Bravo Rd, maybe the same three I had seen
earlier.
