Made a solo trip to Thompson this AM, starting at 5:30 at Trillium Trail. The
C. Ravens at the tower were very noisy before sunrise. I heard three distinct
individuals, two up in the tower and one near the ground, which I was able to
see. Along the road between the parking lot and the tower, several E. Towhees,
several Indigo Buntings, and a Common Yellowthroat (lost?) were singing. The
trees surrounding the tower held three R.-br. Grosbeaks singing while perched
at the tree tops. Despite the intermittent fog on the Trillium Trail, had
really good looks at Cerulean
Warblers, Yellow-throated Vireos, Ovenbirds, Wood Thrushes, Redstarts, and
Rose-breasted Grosbeaks. At one point on the Appalachian Trail, as it descends
to the Access Rd. I had three Yellow-throated Vireos in view, two chasing each
other. A few minutes later, a group of three male and one female Cerulean
Warbler moved into view, with the males chasing one another while the female
fed, and occasionally chased a male. Coming up the Access Rd. back to the
parking lot, I encountered a male Cerulean singing near the top of a tree,
while a female was collecting nesting material lower down in the same tree.
Notables on the trail from the Skyline parking area were two Cerulean W.
singing and two Hooded W. singing. On opposite sides of the trail near the
Upper Ted parking area, were two Kentucky Warblers singing, and a Hooded
Warbler.
While driving down Rte. 55 during a fruitless search for lunch, I saw a Kestrel
perched on telephone wires near Leeds Manor Rd.
