My team was assigned territory in DC as part of the Fairfax Audubon waterfowl
count. We met at Hains Point at 8am - since it was still snowing and
visibility was poor, we decided to start at Gerogetown Reservoir and work back
to
Hains Point.
Georgetown Reservoir had:
60 Ring-necked duck
1 PB Grebe
working back along the Potomac River we stopped at Thompsons Boat House near
the Kennedy Center where Rock Creek flows in to the Potomac...only ducks there
were a pretty good find - 2 pair of Wood Duck in the creek.
at the tidal basin, we spotted 1 DC corm on the pedal boat dock along w. 30
or so Herring Gulls a few ringers and one GBB Gull -
From the tidal basin we went to James Creek Marina at Buzzards Point -
3 Am. Coot
1 PB Grebe
up the Anacostia to DC yacht club
1 Am. Coot
back to Hains Point - the snow had stopped, sun was coming out - we were able
to see a basically empty river - aside from mallards
2 Bufflehead
2 DC Corms
total mallards - 75
total C. Goose - 490
we decided to stop at Roaches Run in Arlington on our way home and were
rewarded with One Red-necked Grebe hanging out w. 8 PB Grebes along the far
shore,
straight across from the parking lot. There were also 30 Hooded Mergansers...
Thanks to the McCracken family, John, Sharon and Kevin for being such great
sports on one of those crazy birding days...John used to be a traffic control
engineer in DC so there was no one better to be driving us about and nosing us
in to all these great spots to access the Potomac and Anacostia Rivers...Rich
