I went back to using Adobe Reader XI for the moment as I couldn't open any
documents with the updated Adobe Reader DC. I tried it with NVDA as well but
had no luck.

Yes, and it's working ok for me. What is the version you're on now? Did it
install fully? Have you got any earlier version of JAWS or another
screen-reader to use with it? (It shouldn't be screen-reader or
JAWS-related; but stranger things have happened.) I wonder if youy need to
make changes in Adobe's settings. Can you open Adobe Reader DC itself, with
no PDF opened?
