Apple changed the smartphone game when it announced and launched the original
iPhone

way back in June 2007.
Now, nearly a decade later, the company has announced it has shifted one
billion of the devices.
The news came as Apple also announced its quarterly earnings for the third
quarter of 2016, in which it surprisingly beat projections and sold 40.4
million phones.
Hitting the billion milestone is impressive enough, but doubly so when you
consider Apple only sold its 500 millionth iPhone in March 2014 and its 700
millionth handset a year later.
"Last week we passed another major milestone when we sold the billionth
iPhone," Apple boss Tim Cook said at an employee meeting.
"We never set out to make the most, but we've always set out to make the best
products that make a difference. Thank you to everyone at Apple for helping
change the world every day."
In the ultimate humblebrag, he also said that the iPhone "has become one of the
most important, world-changing and successful products in history" and "truly
an essential part of our daily life".
Apple's increased sales rate has undoubtedly been bolstered by expansion into
crucial markets, such as China.
The company will no doubt be looking to keep this trend alive when it releases
