Sending a message in facebook Once you have logged in to facebook there are a number of functions which can be performed. In this tutorial we will look at sending a simple message to someone and then we will reply to a message received from another facebook user. 1. Log into Facebook using your user name and password. The user name can be your email address and the password can be anything you like which you would have been asked for when you set up your account. 2. Once you have logged in successfully, arrow down the page till you come to messages link or you can tab to it either. My tip for this one that is if you are a jaws user, press keys "control + F" for find and then type in messages. Press enter and you will now be on the messages link. 3. Enter on the messages link and give it a few moments to open up. Once the page has loaded you can arrow down to the list of messages waiting for your attention or tab to them. Tip: To jump quickly to your list of messages in Facebook, press the letter "X". By pressing this letter it will jump you to the first checkbox that exists on the page. In this case it will be just above your messages list. Note: This shortcut key only applies to a jaws user or a user of another screen reader that supports this kind of shortcut key. Also if there are no messages for you then it's likely that there will be no checkboxes as these checkboxes only apply to someone who has messages waiting to be read. 4. If no messages exist at this time for you, or its your very first message that you wish to send to someone then here's how you do it. Arrow down too or press tab till you get to the "new message" link. Tip: remember the jaws find feature from the instructions above using the "control + F" keys to find something on a page. 5. Once on the new message link, press the enter key. This will open up the page where you can type in your message details. These will include; *. Email address of person to send too. *. Subject lin. *. message body. Note: Just use your tab key to move to each of these boxes and fill in the information. 6. When you have all the details filled in to your message, you are now ready to send. Tab over to the "send button" and press the spacebar. Note: At this point your message should be sent. (Replying to a message) We looked at creating a new message above, what if you have a message waiting to be replied too?. Let's look at replying to that message. 1. Once logged in, use the jaws find discussed above to locate the "messages link" 2. Press enter on the link and wait for a new page to load up. 3. Press the letter "X" to jump to the first checkbox. Remember this should drop us just a few lines above our first message. 4. Press the down arrow till you come to the name and subject of the person who send us the message we wish to reply too. 5. When you get to the subject line of the message, note that this is also a link, hit enter on this link to first read your message. 6. After you have finished reading the message, there will be a "reply link" on this page. Again use your jaws find to locate it for the sake of speed. When you have landed on it, press the enter key. 7. Now you will be on a page with a "message edit box" which you can type into whatever reply you want to send to the friend, family member etc you wish. 8. Once finished typing up the message, tab over to the "reply button" and press spacebar. At this point your message will be sent back to the person you directed it too.
