Windows 10 FAQs
Freedom Scientific Answers your Windows 10 Upgrade Questions
As we approach Microsoft’s much anticipated release of Windows 10, we know you
have many questions about whether our products will work in that environment,
whether you should upgrade, and what to expect if you do. Below are our answers
to those and more questions. As always, you can contact our Technical Support
department at 727-803-8600, or by email at support@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx.
Will JAWS and Magic work with Windows 10?
Yes. Anyone using JAWS 16 or Magic 13 can download and install the latest
versions for free from our web site. See below for more details.
What version of JAWS and Magic do I need to have for Windows 10?
You must be running the latest version of each of these products: JAWS 16 and
Magic 13.
To verify which specific build you are running, place focus on the JAWS or
Magic user interface, and use the following keystrokes. For JAWS, press
INSERT+NUM PAD 8. For Magic, press INSERT+NUM PAD 3
Important note:
When upgrading from Windows 7, you will need to install JAWS over
top of the previous JAWS installation (that was on your Windows 7 system)
before it functions correctly.
Is this an SMA upgrade for JAWS 16 or Magic 13?
No. This is a free update available to anyone running JAWS 16 or Magic 13. If
you have update notifications turned on in JAWS or Magic, you may have already
downloaded and installed the latest software.
Should I upgrade to Windows 10?
That decision is up to you. However, if you do decide to upgrade your computer
to the newest Windows operating system, keep in mind that Freedom Scientific
has worked closely with Microsoft to ensure that JAWS and Magic will run on day
one of the Windows 10 release.
Will upgrading to Windows 10 cause me to utilize one of my license keys?
No. Upgrading to Windows 10 will preserve your existing authorization and not
utilize one of your licenses.
Is it better to upgrade JAWS or Magic before or after upgrading to Windows 10?
When upgrading from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10, it is best to install the latest
JAWS 16 and Magic 13 releases before starting the Windows upgrade. Once the
upgrade is complete, you can start and continue using your software just like
before.
For JAWS, an extra step is involved when upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows
10. Download and install the latest JAWS 16 release before the upgrade, and
then reinstall JAWS after upgrading to Windows 10.
For Magic, install the latest Magic 13 release after you have installed Windows
10.
What can I expect when upgrading to Windows 10?
If you have assistive technology software installed on your computer, Windows
10 will detect it and stop the upgrade. At that point, you must contact your
software provider for more information. We have created a free upgrade utility
that will scan your computer for earlier versions of Freedom Scientific
software and clean these components from your system. You can then restart the
Windows 10 upgrade, and when finished, either run JAWS or Magic, or reinstall
your software (if upgrading from Windows 7) and continue using it the same way
as before the upgrade.
What can I expect to be different in Windows 10?
See below for details.
Will all my current applications work the same in Windows 10?
For the most part, you should expect a very similar experience with your
applications in Windows 10 as you did with Windows 7 or Windows 8.1. We cannot
speak for other vendors, but Freedom Scientific engineers have been hard at
work ensuring that you have a positive experience in Windows 10.
There are some known accessibility limitations as described by Microsoft. They
recommend the following:
• Set your default web browser to Internet Explorer (or Firefox) for a more
accessible web browsing experience
• Install a 3rd party PDF reader like Adobe Reader, for a more accessible PDF
reading experience
• Use the Outlook and Office desktop applications for a more accessible email
and productivity experience
• If you have a secondary computer, consider upgrading that one first, to
familiarize yourself with the Windows 10 experience
Will OpenBook work with Windows 10?
Yes. When upgrading from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10, you will still be able to
run OpenBook 9 just like before. Simply install the Windows 10 update, and,
when finished, launch and run OpenBook. After upgrading from Windows 7 to
Windows 10, you will have to reinstall OpenBook.
Will WYNN work with Windows 10?
Yes. When upgrading to Windows 10, you will still be able to run WYNN 7 just
like before.
