No harm at all in showing your hand, Nicky, but I'm afraid I don't have a donkey's clue as to how the competition is organised, other than what my suppositions previously stated.

In the first and maybe second year of its inception, I thought the aim was to promote the use of Braille and that's why I entered; thinking my story as a full-time user of Louis's code might encourage or inspire others to realise its benefits and possibly see a return for my efforts orat least be notified when the results are due and announced.

But as the EBU and Onkyo have since turned it into an annual event, one would nearly think there must be politics behind the idea at this stage. I cannot think of anything further to write in an essay of the same theme year in year out, hence my no longer being too bothered about it.

Would you have any suggestions yourself as to how the competition should be conducted, given the vagaries and globalisation of it? Before the World Blind Union and Onkyo came onboard, there was a contest run by the Canadian National Institute of the Blind, in the year 2000, under the heading, What Braille Meanse To Me. For this contest, entries had to be submitted by the writer on Braille paper to a postal address out there, and were then presented for adjudication with typed up copies.

Back then, of course, the online world was more in its infancy and it seems so much easier to make things more uniform by this means in today's climate.

John, do you personally have any sort of knowledge as to how this farce encourages Braille then? Sorry, I did say I wouldn't go on about this and I am holding back but like would just like to know if you could answer that. ----- Original Message ----- From: "John Lynch" <johnlynch7@xxxxxxxxxx>

Yes Tony, I have a 25-cell one-line guide also, very handy for labelling and more convenient than the rather cumbersome dymo gun. As well as the one-line guide, the same job can be done on a 26-cell 4-line slate and this slate can also be used for Brailling on full-size sheets, by moving it down the page every four lines. Ah, that's the style alright now.

To the best of my knowledge, information and belief, the essays are not read in Braille by the adjudicators; this is done electronically. Besides, they have to be translated into either English or French from the other languages of entrants' native countries.
