Yes the U key worked fine so thanks for all of that and the other info too.
It's very time-consuming I assure you having to trawl through a load of
stuff in the jaws help just to obtain a simple keystroke that just
allude us sometimes so am pleased you saved me all of that.

Firstly, JAWS uses the "u" to go to unvisited links and the letter "v" to go
to visited links.
Next, about browse mode. On a web page you are in browse mode unless you
have an edit box open. JAWS makes a dropping note when you open an edit box.
Pressing escape will close the edit box and bring you back to browse mode
giving a slightly higher ping note to confirm the action of leaving the open
edit box.
By the way, Insert+1 on the main keyboard open the JAWS keyboard help and
this will show you all the available shortcut keys.
The marker looks like an interesting feature but I have never used it.
NVDA uses the letter "k" to move from link to link and does not worry about
whether the link is visited or unvisited. As I say, just different
approaches!

Thanks Cearbhall but forgive my ignorance but how does one get in to browse
mode?
I don't appear to see it in menus and when I hit K I'm told that there are
no markers although there are links.
