for.
As you say, the object navigation concept takes a bit of getting used to but
I am beginning to slowly understand the logic behind it. Your explanations
will be helpful in getting me there.
I will definitely invest in the ebook. For me, at any rate, having
practical exercises to practise is a great way of helping me to understand
what is going on and, as I've already said, I was impressed by the review
mode explanations and exercises in the free sample. It sound like exactly
what I need.

I did purchase the book
"Basic Training for NVDA 2016"
It is very well written and loudly acclaimed as a means of getting familiar
with NVDA.
You may find words like "navigator object" "focus mode" and caret" confusing
at first. These are the correct word for describing these objects. JAWS uses
more comfortable layman words like JAWS cursor and PC cursor for the more
familiar objects that you will need to identify. However, there are other
things and this is where JAWS falls down. It does not have the language to
describe what is really on the screen because of these fudge words.
I would strongly recommend that you buy this book as it is very well written
with good working examples to clarify each step.
The number pad has two functions. Pressing the numbers 8, 5 and 2 will say
the line, word or character in focus. The numbers are used to read what is
to the left of the focus and to the right of the focus. So numbers 7, 4 and
1 will speak the line, word or character to the left of the focus and
likewise, the 9, 6 and 3 will speak the line, word and character to the
right of the focus.
The second function of the number pad is to move back up through the levels
of the containing objects. This is done by combining the NVDA key with the
numpad number keys. There are different tasks for each key combination and
so I will not attempt to list them here. You will find the explanation of
them very easy in this book.
An OK button is just one object in a collection of objects that make up a
save file dialog, for example. The other objects are the file name, the
folder tree where the file is to be placed, the type of file whether MS
Word, or text file and so on. The object review starts at the point where
the system caret (the cursor) is sitting at the moment when you start the
review. Accordingly, the review response when you press numpad 8 is "ok" and
nothing else. Pressing the NVDA key and numpad 8 pushes the review to the
next level that contains the OK button. Now numpad 8 on its own will show
other objects that are above and to the left and right and below the OK
button on the screen.
This whole concept is unlike any other screen reader and so needs a bit of
practice to get it into our heads!
