This phonetic alphabet does not apply just to computers. It has been applied
throughout the world of communications since (I believe I heard) about 1954.
It is called (if I'm not mistaken), the NATO Phonetic Alphabet. It's used in
radio communications of all sorts, ham radio, marine radio, air traffic
control, etc., etc., and has been applied by the ITU, in post offices and
telephone exchanges. .
