THE ROBERTS RECORD R -
A DAB/FM RADIO THAT GIVES LISTENING ON DEMAND A WHOLE NEW MEANING
JACKIE BROWN

My thanks go to British Wireless for the Blind, (BWBF), for allowing me the
opportunity to review this radio.

The Roberts Record R is a portable DAB/FM device that allows you to record
and pause live radio using an SD card. The benefit of this feature is that
you can halt your listening to answer the phone or door, then return to a
programme without missing any of its content. Many radios require you to
enter an on-screen menu to facilitate this feature. Not so with the Roberts
Record R, and here is why.

The Record R is 242mm wide, by 147mm high, by 85mm deep, and weighs 1.02kg.
It is green with contrasting grey.

EXPLORING THE ROBERTS RECORD R

With the radio standing on a flat surface, the top comprises three tactile
buttons, one small round button at each end, and a long oval button in the
centre. A carry handle folds down behind these buttons, and a telescopic
aerial lies horizontally at the rear.

A speaker grille occupies the lower half of the front of the radio, while
the display and Two rows of small tactile round buttons take up the top
half. The top row has only two buttons, and the second row six buttons.

The left side of the Record R comprises an SD card slot, 3.5mm headphone and
auxiliary line-in sockets, and the power outlet. The right side of the
Record R houses rotary volume and tone controls, volume being the larger of
the two. Finally, the battery compartment is stowed at the rear of the
radio, taking four D cells. Note that this radio does not have a battery
charging facility.

USING THE ROBERTS RECORD R

When using the Record R for the first time, insert the power cord into the
bottom socket of the device on the left side. Extend the telescopic aerial
and press the small round button on the top left of the unit to turn it on.
The Record R should now search for all DAB stations in your area which takes
approximately 30 seconds. You should soon hear sound coming from the radio
when the first station in alphabetical order is located.

To save a favourite station, find the second row of six buttons on the front
of the radio. From left to right, these are preset one/pause/play; preset
two/stop; preset three/rewind; preset four/forward; preset five/play mode.
The final button on this row is slightly spaced to the right, and is the
band selector: choose from DAB, FM, and Auxiliary. Press and hold the
preset of your choice to store a favourite. You have five stations each on
DAB and FM to choose from.

The two buttons on the row above are spaced out. The button on the left is
the one-touch record button, and the one further over at the right end is
the menu button. If you insert an SD card (not provided), you can simply
press the record button to start on demand recording. Note that when you
begin this process, sound is muted. Press the record button again to stop
recording. You may use on demand recording on both DAB and FM, but only
when an SD card is inserted.

There is an alarm feature on this radio, but it is completely inaccessible
unless you have enough vision to see what you are doing on the display. You
can wake up to radio or music from the SD card if you prefer. The radio
supports MP3, WMA, and AAC formats on the SD card.

If you wish to tune your radio manually, press the larger oval button on the
top of the unit. It will tune one way by pressing it to the left, and the
other when pressed to the right. On DAB, press the small round accept
button to the right of the oval button when tuning to select your station.

CONCLUSION AND PRICING

The Record R is a lovely portable radio, and fairly accessible if you have
little or no sight. All buttons are tactile, and sound is clear and
comfortable to listen to. And this radio is aesthetically pleasing with its
cool green and grey colour contrast as well.

Being able to press a dedicated button for on demand recording is certainly
an improvement on having to enter a menu to do this, and playing audio of
your choice from an SD card is a nice addition.

If you are looking for something portable and sleek for the home, then the
Roberts Record R is worth consideration. It can be purchased through BWBF
for £100 plus £7.50 postage and packaging by calling 01622 754757, or via
all good outlets such as Amazon.
