What is a podcast? Podcasting lets you automatically receive the latest episode of your chosen programme, monthly I.T magazine or some other newsletter etc as soon as it's available. You can "subscribe" to receive a podcast, rather like you might subscribe to a magazine and get it delivered. You can stop receiving the files at any time. If you'd rather not subscribe, you can download episodes of a podcast series individually whenever you choose. In order to subscribe for a podcast, you need an internet connection and a piece of podcast software which is usually available free of charge. Once you have installed this software, it will check the various subscribed sites you have listed on your pod catcher software for new episodes of your chosen podcast series and automatically download new MP3 files for you. You can then listen to podcast files on your computer, or transfer them to a portable device, such as an mp3 player. An example of software for listening to podcasts could be something like; *. ITunes. *. Windows Media Player. We will take a look at subscribing to a podcast using ITunes so here goes. 1. First ensure that you have ITunes installed on your computer. 2. Look for a particular podcast of your choice, for our demonstration we will use the "FSCast Podcast from Freedom Scientific" so we will need to visit the following web site; http://www.freedomscientific.com/FSCast/subscribe.asp Notes: The above link will bring you directly to where Freedom Scientific have the various ways from which you can subscribe to their podcast.. Please when trying to copy the above link or trying to activate it directly from within this email that you ensure that your email is fully maximised so as to avoid the link getting broken onto two lines, otherwise it won't work for you. 3. When you arrive on the above mentioned page your next exercise is to locate the correct link on the page that will provide for you the means to have the FSCast podcast updated for you each month afterwards from within your chosen pod catcher. Notes: What I mean by this is that you need a particular link much like a web address but not completely like it either. This special kind of web link ensures that you are "Subscribed/Connected" in a way to the most current podcast available from the particular web site you are working on whether it be the Freedom Scientific site or any other site from which you want to obtain a podcast regularly from. 4. Now let's move on to looking for the special link on the Freedom Scientific web site that will provide this special address for us. When the Freedom Scientific web page has loaded up, use keys, "Control + Home" on your keyboard to go to the top of the page then press the letter "H". Jaws if you are using Jaws or even NVDA the free screen reader will announce, "RSS Link, heading level 1". 5. Now press the "Enter key" once and you will be on the link called, "Select for RSS podcast feed link". When here, press the "Application key" or use keys, "Shift + F10" and a menu should open. 6. From the resulting menu arrow down to where it says, "Copy shortcut" and press the enter key. Notes: Now you have copied the special RSS podcast link to your clipboard for use later. 7. Close out of the Internet and now it's time to open up ITunes which there should be a shortcut on your desktop, if there is press the "Enter key" on it and wait for it to open up. 8. When ITunes opens up and if its ITunes 11 which is the latest you will now use keys, "Alt + F" to open the file menu then arrow down to "Add Podcast" and press the "Enter key". 9. When the Add podcast address edit box opens up, use keys, "Control + V" to paste in the link you copied earlier then tab to the OK button and press the "Spacebar" to complete. Now you have just added your first podcast to ITunes and with a bit of luck you will now begin to receive the FSCast podcast as they are produced. Below I have given you the link you need to paste into ITunes for convenience but it would be a good idea if you practised it for yourselves. Here is the podcast link; http://www.freedomscientific.com/FSCast/rss.xml Good luck, Paul.
