Subject: [vip_students] Using the internet with Jaws

  Hi All,

Came across the below tutorial in my documents folder. Don't know now where
it originated!

It looks like that Paul should get the credit!

Should this have been on the list already, well it deserves a second airing
in my opinion!

  Using the Internet with Jaws

Internet Explorer is used to view web pages on the Internet. To open Internet
Explorer, go to the Start Menu, arrow down to Internet Explorer and press Enter.

When using the Internet, bear in mind that not all sites are accessible. And
websites that are accessible today, may change tomorrow.

Jaws handles web pages by using a virtual view. Jaws makes websites
accessible by having special keyboard shortcuts to access the common parts of
web pages.

  Opening a Known Website

To open a particular website, press Control + O and type in the web address.
Alternatively, press Alt + D to get to the address bar and then edit the
address. For example, the NCBI website is www.ncbi.ie. When Jaws loads a web
page, it will then start reading the whole page from top to bottom and from
left to right.

Note: Websites may not be set up linearly and, in that case, Jaws may not be
able to read them affectively.

  Links

Links enable you to move from one web page to another. One of the most common
links on a web page is "Home", which takes you back to the main web page for a
particular set of web pages (website).

Jaws will tell you when you are on a link. To move through the links on a web
page, press the Tab button. Use Shift + Tab to move back through the links.
Once positioned on a link, simply press Enter to follow the link to the next
web page.

On the NCBI website, there are several links at the top of the Home page that
take you to other pages, such as, Shop, Information, Technology etc.

Press Insert + F7 to get a complete list of all the links on the page. If you
know what link you are looking for, you can enter the first letter of that link
while in this list, and it will take you to all the links beginning with that
letter.

To go back and reload the previous web page, press Alt + Left Arrow. To move
forward again, press Alt + Right Arrow.

  Headings

Most web pages will contain some text and this text will be in different
sections with headings. Typing H will take you from one heading to the next
heading. This allows you to skip to the part that you are interested in on that
web page. Shift + H will take you back through the headings.

  Moving Around a Web Page

Generally, to move around the text on a web page, you can use the same
keyboard shortcuts as in Microsoft Word:

To go to the top of the page, use Control + Home

To go to the bottom of the page, use Control + End

To go to the beginning of a line, use Home

To go to the end of a line, use End

To move one word at a time (to the left or the right), use Control + right or
left arrow

To move a paragraph at a time (up or down), use Control + up or down arrow

Hope that the tutorial will have been of use to some!

  Tony Sweeney.
