Saving a Document with a Different Name Introduction: You can save a lot of time and energy by using the text from an existing document to create a new document. Saving an existing document under a new name does just this. In this lesson, you will save an existing file named "If you locate the memo file y ou created in Lesson 2" as a new file name which you would have made back then. Step 1. Start the Microsoft Word program . You learned how to start Word in the previous chapter. (Magnification users) Step 2. Click the Open button on the Standard toolbar . (Screen reader users) Another way to open a document is to "Alt + F for File and down arrow to Open". Or press Keys "Ctrl + O ". *. The Open dialog box appears. Step 3. Navigate to and open your Practice folder . (Keyboard users) Step 4. Press "control + O" and then press "shift + tab" once to jump into the list of files on your computer, then use the arrow keys to move up and down till you locate a suitable file and then press enter. Note:Your computer stores information in files and folders, just like you store information in a filing cabinet. To open a file, you must first find and open the folder where it's saved. Microsoft Word normally saves new documents to a folder named "My Documents," but sometimes you will want to save or open documents in another folder. (Magnification users) *. You can double-click a file name in the Open dialog box instead of selecting the file name and clicking Open . Note:The File you double clicked on or press the enter key on opens and appears in Word's document window. You want to use the text from this document to create a new document. Since you don't want to make any changes to the File, save it with a different name. *. Call it some new name of your choice. Step 5. Select "alt + F for File" then down arrow to "Save As" and press the "enter key". Note:Have you noticed the difference between the choices n the file menu of; *. Save, And, *. Save As?. I will leave that for you to work out. Step 6. The Save As dialog box appears presenting you with a file name box with the cursor in it all ready for you to type in a name over the existing name.. Step 7. Once you have given the file a new name just press the "enter key" or mouse users, just left click on the save button. *. The new file document is saved under a new file name, and the original old file name document closes. Now you can work on the new document, without changing the original document.
