Saving a Document with a Different Name

Introduction:
You can save a lot of time and energy by using the text from an existing
document to create a new document. Saving an existing document under a new
name
does just this. In this lesson, you will save an existing file named "If you
locate the memo file y ou created in Lesson 2" as a new file name which you
would have made back then.

Step 1. Start the Microsoft Word program .

You learned how to start Word in the previous chapter.
(Magnification users)
Step 2. Click the Open button on the Standard toolbar .
(Screen reader users)
Another way to open a document is to "Alt + F for File and down arrow to
Open". Or press Keys "Ctrl + O ".

*. The Open dialog box appears.

Step 3. Navigate to and open your Practice folder .

(Keyboard users)
Step 4. Press "control + O" and then press "shift + tab" once to jump into
the list of files on your computer, then use the arrow keys to move up and
down till you locate a suitable file and then press enter.

Note:Your computer stores information in files and folders, just like you
store information in a filing cabinet. To open a file, you must first find
and open
the folder where it's saved. Microsoft Word normally saves new documents to
a folder named "My Documents," but sometimes you will want to save or open
documents in another folder.

(Magnification users)
*. You can double-click a file name in the Open dialog box instead of
selecting the file name and clicking Open .

Note:The File you double clicked on or press the enter key on opens and
appears in Word's document window. You want to use the text from this
document to create a new document. Since you don't
want to make any changes to the File, save it with a different name.

*. Call it some new name of your choice.

Step 5. Select "alt + F for File" then down arrow to "Save As" and press
the "enter key".

Note:Have you noticed the difference between the choices n the file menu of;
*. Save,
And,
*. Save As?.
I will leave that for you to work out.

Step 6. The Save As dialog box appears presenting you with a file name box
with the cursor in it all ready for you to type in a name over the existing
name..

Step 7. Once you have given the file a new name just press the "enter key"
or mouse users, just left click on the save button.

*. The new file document is saved under a new file name, and the original
old file name document closes.
Now you can work on the new document, without changing the original
document.

QUICK REFERENCE

TO OPEN A DOCUMENT:

End of lesson.
