For JAWS Users:
In this lesson, you'll learn how to add and modify tab stops by using the
Tabs dialog box. The Tabs dialog box is slightly slower to work with than
setting tabs with the horizontal ruler, but it is more accurate and gives
you more options. It also allows you to precisely enter where you want a tab
stop, instead of eyeballing it on the ruler.

Setting a Tab Stop: (measurements are in cm) 1. Select Format (Alt and O) .
2. Down arrow to Tabs and press the Enter Key. The Tabs dialog box
appears.
3. In the Tab stop position text box you can type in the Tab stop position
for example 4 or whatever you require.
4. Now as you use your tab key to go through this dialogue box you will
hear the alignment of the tab stop for example left and if you down arrow
through these radio buttons it will allow you to select a different
alignment right, center etc. Other choices in this dialogue box are Clear
All Button which if entered on will clear all your tab stop positions.
Note you will also hear a One None Radio Button and these are a selection of
* Leaders which are explained below in detail so just ignore this for the
moment.
5. Now just enter on the Set Button and this will add a new, Left 4 cm
tab.
Note: It is at this point if you wish to add another tab stop position you
can do it now as after entering on the Set Button you are landed back at the
Tab Stop Position colon edit where you can now type in another measurement
for example 8 and once again enter on the Set Button.
6. When you have all your tab stops set just enter on the OK Button.
The Tabs dialog box now closes.

Open a new document and complete the following simple exercise using the
above tab stop positions with the Left alignment:
1. Set the above tab stops of 4 and 8 as instructed above.
2. Your cursor will be firstly positioned at the left margin so just type
in the word Room.
3 Now use your tab key and your cursor should land on the first tab stop
which is set at 4 so now just type in Teacher.
4. Just tab once again and the cursor should be at the second tab stop
which was set at 8 so type in Subject here.
5. Press the enter key and this will bring you back to the margin under the
word Room so type in 1 here.
6. Press the tab key and you should now be under the word Teacher and type
in Mr. Brown here.
7. Now using the tab key once again the cursor should be placed under the
word Subject so just type in English.
8. Now repeat steps from 5 to 7 to insert another line of information from
the margin through to the two other tab stop positions.
Note: When you press your tab key JAWS will announce the cursor position so
you can ensure that you are in the correct position for typing your
information.

* Leaders:
The Tabs dialog box also offers a setting that is not available on the
ruler: leaders . A leader is a set of periods or lines that run from one
place to another. Leaders make reading lengthy lists and reference material
easier and are usually used in the table of contents section of a report or
book. It is also good for lists which include prices and here you can also
include the decimal tab to align money.

Try using a leader with a decimal alignment for a list of shopping:
1. Open a new document in Microsoft Word.
2. Select Format (Alt and O).
3. Down arrow to Tabs and enter.
4. Type in 9 in the Tab stop position colon edit box .
5. Now tab and you will hear Left radio button checked and down arrow here
to Decimal.
6. Now tab once more and you will hear 1 None radio which will indicate you
are in the Leader section, Down arrow once to the second option number to
radio button so as to place a dotted leader before the tab stop where the
money will be typed.
Note: You could have also chosen a dash leader (3) or a line leader (4).
7. Now just enter on the Set button and then on the OK to close the dialog
box .

Simple Exercise:
Complete the above instructions from 1 to 7.

Your cursor is now at the margin so just type in the word Pencils and tab
now to type in the price for example 10.00 and enter.

With your cursor back at the margin type in Books and tab to type in an
amount of 250.00 and enter.

Now with your cursor back once again at the margin on your third line type
in rubbers and tab to type in 1.25

A dotted leader now is placed after each item Pencils, Books and Rubbers and
the position of the decimal point is aligned directly under each other
irrespective of its amount.

You can change, add, and remove tab stops very easily. Here's how:

Click the 3 cm mark on the ruler .
Word inserts a left-align tab stop where you click on the ruler. The heading
is aligned with the left-align tab stop.
To change the type of tab stop Word uses, click the Tab alignment box until
the tab stop you want appears, then click the ruler to add that type of tab
stop.

The Tab alignment box cycles between the four different types of tab stop
alignment - Left, Right, Center and Decimal.

QUICK REFERENCE
TO USE THE TABS DIALOG BOX:

SELECT FORMAT → TABS FROM THE MENU.

TO ADD A LEADER TO A TAB STOP:

SELECT FORMAT → TABS FROM THE MENU TO OPEN THE TABS DIALOG BOX.

SELECT THE LEADER YOU WANT TO USE, CLICK THE SET BUTTON , AND CLICK OK .
