Thanks very much for that Paul. I will have a go at that one of these days and let you know how I get on.

Best wishes,

Kathleen Doyle.

Subject: [vip_students] Re: saving files & folders to memory stick

Hi Kathleen,

"I am endeavoring to save files & folders from my computer on to a memory
stick. I have succeeded in copying and pasting files from "my documents" to

a folder I have created on the memory stick, but am not having the same
success with files from a number of folders I have saved in Outlook Express.

I am selecting all the files in each folder but don't seem to be able to
copy and paste them into the new folders on the memory stick. "

This is a slightly different area of copying and pasting than would be used
for normal documents such as those produced by MS Word or Excel etc. Let's
look at how we might achieve what you are trying to do and that is make a
backup of your email folders. Here is how I would approached this task and
have done successfully in the past using the method below.

1. first of all I need to look for a folder on my computer called:
"Identities". This folder houses some sub folders and ultimately within
those sub folders are contained the files which are just that "files" but
whenever we open up our outlook express program those files magically
transform themselves into meaningful folders such as the normal "Inbox,
Outbox, Deleted Items box" along with other folders which we ourselves have created to store different types of emails. Don't get too caught up in what
I have just written here but simply understand that we are looking for
special types of files which are to be copied into a backup on our pen
drives, that's all it is, nothing more.

2. Where is this "Identities folder" located?. Well if you open up your
"start menu and press "R" for run, a run dialogue box will open up waiting
for you to type in something to it. Type in something like the following
path which I have written below:

C:\documents and settings\user name\application data

Note: I have used the word "user name". You must use your user name here, it could be Kathleen or it might be KDoyle or something like that, I don't know
what your user name here is so you will have to look it up or maybe you
already know. Anyway, replace in the line above where it contains "user
name" with your own user name whatever it is. Once you have the line above
typed in correctly, press enter.

3. Now you will be in an area where you will have folders you haven't seen
before. In here you will come across the identities folder I first
mentioned. Within this Identities folder will be another sub folder like a
string of numbers and letters and again when you press enter on this sub
folder, you will have another sub folder called Microsoft. Once more inside
the Microsoft folder will be a final sub folder called "outlook express".
Press enter here and you will see those special files I mentioned before.
They will have all the names that you are familiar with seeing whenever you open up outlook express. These are the folders that have to be saved on your
backup pen drive.

4. Okay, so now that we have located the folder Identities we will now save
this folder "including all its sub folders and special files". I recommend
that you simply copy in its entirety the "Identities folder" as this was
how I did it and had success later on when I needed to restore that file.
Tip: On the pen drive just before you copy the Identities folder to it,
create a new folder. Give it a name, call it Emails2010 or something like
that with a date at the end of it, perhaps the year or if you intend to make
a backup often of emails then perhaps use something like EMailsApril30th.
Once you create this folder, paste in the identities folder inside it.

Now you should be good to go and have a backup of your recent and old items,
both files and folders saved.

Good luck,

Paul.
