FYIPostdoctoral/Senior Researcher "International Relations"/"Global Governance"/"Sustainable Development"
Vacancynumber 1.2007.00336The Institute for Environmental Studies (IVM) of the Faculty of Earth and Life Sciences of VU University offers a postdoc position for an interdisciplinary international research programme that will investigate the integration of research on institutions and governance for sustainability into formal models and scenarios. Research Project Governance and institutions are increasingly becoming a central concern within the more quantitatively oriented modelling and scenarios community. In order to understand the effectiveness of institutions in steering society and the international system at large towards sustainability, a number of approaches have been developed within International Relations and global environmental governance research that potentially can be integrated into the ongoing attempts to model political developments and interventions. The foci of our work on "governance and institutions" will be on (1) questions regarding effectiveness of international institutions; and (2) questions regarding design of future international policies. The theoretical work will be combined with empirical work on a case study in the field of energy or land use policies.
The project is a collaboration between IVM and the Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency (Milieu- en Natuurplanbureau, MNP). The project team will work closely with researchers from the University of California at Santa Barbara (Oran Young). The project will also be integral part of current efforts in developing a long-term research programme on governance and institutions within the International Human Dimensions Programme on Global Environmental Change. The successful candidate will become a member of IVM's Department of Environmental Policy Analysis, an international group of about 35 researchers with backgrounds in a variety of social science disciplines. The group has recently been evaluated by an international committee of experts as the top department in its field in the country and "at the forefront internationally". Job descriptionThe main activities are: · Reviewing the literature on governance and institutions with a view towards integration into models and scenarios;
· Developing and applying a framework to assess the effectiveness of institutions; · Testing and refining the model in the area of energy and land use policies; · Communicating results to domestic and international audiences. Qualifications The successful candidate has a strong research background in political science and international relations, as evidenced through a doctoral degree and international peer-reviewed publications. Interest in modelling and quantitative approaches is desired. Experience in guiding research teams and in acquiring project funds will be an asset, as well as empirical knowledge of, and research or work experience in, global (environmental) governance. In addition, a strong interdisciplinary affinity and curiosity is an asset. Excellent skills in English, the working language within this research programme and within the department, are required. The candidate is expected to spend one day per week at MNP to ensure close collaboration between project partners. Appointment and salaryThe position will be hired in international competition. We plan to launch the programme by 1 December 2007. The appointment will be for 28 month. In general, an extension of the contract is possible, depending on further funding of the project. Visit our website www.vu.nl/vacatures <http://www.vu.nl/vacatures> for a review of working conditions at the VU. Gross monthly salary is minimal 3060 euro and maximal 4190 euro.
