PhD WINTER SCHOOL ON EARTH SYSTEM GOVERNANCE: THE CHALLENGE OF ADAPTIVE GOVERNANCE ---------------------------------------- Call for Applications ----------------------------------- Duration: 24 November -- 4 December 2009 Deadline for applications: 15 May 2009 The Institute for Environmental Studies (IVM) of the VU University Amsterdam, in collaboration with the SENSE Research School for Socio-Economic and Natural Sciences of the Environment welcomes applications for the 2009 European PhD Winter School on Earth System Governance: The Challenge of Adaptive Governance (SENSE Course S460). The 2009 European PhD Winter School on The Challenge of Adaptive Governance aims to help students to better understand the causes of global change in an integrated manner and at the same time to develop options for the governance of a transition to more sustainable development paths at the national and global levels, with a particular focus on questions of adaptation and adaptiveness. It brings together insights from the modeling, integrated assessment, and sustainability science communities and from the social science, governance-oriented research communities. The 2009 European PhD Winter School is supported by the European Union Marie Curie Action and endorsed by the international Global Governance Project (www.glogov.org). The Winter School covers the basic costs for all participants, including a travel subsidy for non-Dutch participants (maximum of 250 EUR), accommodation, lunch, tea and coffee, the teaching materials and a number of social events. In addition, the 2009 European PhD Winter School also includes participation in the 2009 Amsterdam Conference on the Human Dimensions of Global Environmental Change: Earth System Governance (2-4 December 2009). For more details on the conference, visit: http://www.earthsystemgovernance.org/ac2009/. The participation fee is EUR 250 for European participants and EUR 200 for non-European participants. In addition to participating in the lectures and class discussions, a number of students have the opportunity to present their current research to a group of distinguished experts for intense discussion. If you want your work to be discussed in a PhD Masterclass, please attach an abstract of your paper to the application material. Papers should address the adaptiveness of earth system governance, a theme that includes here related concepts such as adaptation, adaptive management, resilience, or vulnerability. What are the politics of adaptiveness? Which governance processes foster it? What attributes of governance systems enhance capacities to adapt? How, when and why does adaptiveness influence earth system governance? Students are encouraged to also submit their papers to the 2009 Amsterdam Conference. To apply, please send a letter of motivation and a recent CV to: Hilko.Blok@xxxxxxxxxx To be included in the Masterclass section, please attach a research paper that addresses the challenge of adaptive governance.
