[wdmaudiodev] Duplicate Microphones in Vista "Recording Devices"

I have come across an unusual problem on a couple of machines:

After installing an audio driver, the device manager shows one instance of the audio driver working correctly. The Vista "Recording Devices" Sound, Recording tab shows 2 microphones from the driver. One of the microphones has a volume bars next to it the other doesn't. If you select the microphone without volume bars as default it will get them and the other duplicate version will have them take away. Both instances of the microphone work fine. Both instances shows identical details for the driver information.

What's really bizarre is once this state happens, uninstalling the driver correctly removes both instances of the microphone and driver, but reinstalling the driver brings both instances back. When uninstalled the device tab doesn't show the driver as disabled, it is correctly gone from the system.

I don't know what is triggering this state, but it is not every time and on different types of machines.

Has anyone seen this before or better yet know how to remove the duplicate?
