[wdmaudiodev] Peak Limiter built into Vista/7 - any way to disable?

When playing through DirectSound in Vista/7 there is clearly some form of peak limiter / compressor at work. As long as the music is well bellow 0dBFS the data pass through unmodified, however as soon as the level approaches 0dB, samples are being manipulated. I know that one can resort to WASAPI or KS to get around this, but for the regular folk with their Windows Media Players or iTunes - is there any way to disable this function? Disabling effects in audio device settings does not seem to help.

Any ideas?
