ASIO has two great features.

1) No "pling you got mail" embedded in your favourite recordings

2) It sets up the DAC with the sample rate of the stored music, not
the OS's default sample rate

Audiophiles know they don't want "pling you got mail". They don't
(all/yet) know they want no sample rate conversion in the OS. But let
them listen, and they tend to be convinced.

I'm sure there are ways for programmers or expert users to sort out
both issues. But for my users it is easier to install an ASIO driver,
flip the DAC over from the default UAC1 to UAC2, and import their
music files into an ASIO compliant player.

In fact, a future universal UAC2 driver should have the option of a
simple control panel. Which, when enabled, would display the sample
rate in the taskbar and have a simple mechanism to rule out all audio
sources but the player program of choice.
