This has absolutely nothing to do with your question, of course, but the
multimedia wave APIs predate the DirectSound APIs by many years. The
waveIn and waveOut APIs arrived with Windows 3.1 in 1992. DirectSound
is a 32-bit API, and did not arrive until after Windows 95.
