The free ffmpeg plugin is what you want. It allows Audacity to open all manner
of file formats including .m4a. You can download it by using this link
<https://www.sendspace.com/pro/dl/w0c2nl> . Once downloaded, run the file and
follow the prompts.

Any plug-in that’ll open in Audacity M4A files? You see on myiPhone, I record
in MP4A, and at leastwhen I used to have GoldWave, I?d open up M4As
withoutproblems, to edit them, and then with GoldWave, convert them to MP3.
