The free ffmpeg plugin is what you want. It allows Audacity to open all manner
of file formats including .m4a. You can download it by using this link. Once
downloaded, run the file and follow the prompts.

Any plug-in that’ll open in Audacity M4A files? You see on myiPhone, I record
in MP4A, and at leastwhen I used to have GoldWave, I?d open up M4As
withoutproblems, to edit them, and then with GoldWave, convert them to MP3.
