[audacity4blind] Recording Levels

Hi Everyone.
I am trying to record from an external device, but when playing back am getting
no sound at all. Before when I did this Audacity would record the r for
record, then continue recording normally.
Could someone please advise how to check and/or change the recording levels
using the keyboard?
Any help appreciated.
Using Jaws 13 and Windows XP.
