Hi Stan,
unfortunately there isn't a setting which you're missing. Recording using
loopback only occurs when audio is being sent to the speakers.
Stereo mix doesn't have this problem, so if Stereo mix is available, that
would be one option.
However, there are ways to get round the problem when using loopback.
Here's one - sounds a little crazy, but works:
1. In Audacity generate a short period of silence, say ten seconds, and
export it in whatever format you want.
2. Then before recording using loopback, open the file containing silence
in a media player, and play it with repeat enabled. This means that audio
is now always being sent to the speakers.
3. Do your loopback recordings.
4. Close the media player.
