electing audio is covered in the audio tutorial I mentioned yesterday. With
apologies, the following is a somewhat rambling description of some options.
The concept of placemarkers in Audacity is not really valid. Think of it a
little like using most word processors, where you highlight text that you want
to embellish or delete. The selection can be adjusted, but if you move the
cursor the highlighting will be lost.
In current Audacity, pressing x will place the cursor at that point and stop
playback. Pressing left bracket ([) when playing will place the cursor at that
point and playing will continue. Pressing right bracket (]) will set the end
of the selection.
Therefore, if you want to select a short segment, you can press left and right
brackets at the appropriate times while playing. Pressing either left or right
bracket when not playing brings up a dialog that allows you to adjust begin and
end times respectively.
But for longer selections, playing until reaching the end point will get very
tedious. You can press shift-right arrow to extend the selection, but that can
also get messy. One reasonably effective option is to start at the end point
and use shift-left arrow to extend the selection to the left. When working in
that direction, if you select too much you can play up to the start point.
Yet another option is to find the beginning and end points and make a note of
the times. You can then enter those times by using left and right brackets or
by going to the selection toolbar with control-f6.

hi Andrew,
what is the key to set place marker?
After setting the place marker, how do I forword the track if it is a long
selection?
Thanks.

Steven, I suspect not. In summary, the left bracket ([) sets the
beginning of the highlight and the right bracket (]) the end. But
getting the begin and end points just where you want them requires a
bit more knowledge. The audio tutorial I mentioned in the previous
post at
https://www.sendspace.com/pro/dl/v56cn4 covers selecting and deleting ;
material.
I just checked it to confirm that. I realised that when I was
adjusting time by milliseconds I did not say that I was using up and
down arrows (slaps wrist).
