What filetypes are you thinking of?

Once you have an audio file in Audacity you can cut copy and paste between different projects. Importing (or your file-opening method of choice) gets audio files into the file format for Audacity to know how to cut copy and paste correctly.

Let us know what steps you are doing to "import" and we might be able to suggest different methods.

Peace,
D

Subject: [audacity4blind] Suggestion on Adding Files to a Project

How feasible would it be to add a feature to Audacity that would enable
pasting files into a project the way you can paste attachments into
emails in many email programs.  I have often thought of this when
creating a project that included various sound files that already
existed on my hard drive.  Pasting would be so much faster and easier
than the current "import" procedure.
