Hi Rich,
just to point out that you can access the menus from anywhere in Audacity's
main window. So, for example, when the Start selection control is the focus,
you can open a menu from there, you don't have to first move back to the Track
table.

I align tracks this way:
Select the track to be moved and make sure all other tracks are not
selected.  Play to the point where you want the selected track to be
aligned and press p for pause.  Press the left square bracket to
position the cursor at that point.  Alternatively, you can press alt-a
to both stop and position the cursor.  Press alt-t followed by a and c
to moved the selected track to that point. This will get you close, but
probably not exact.  To refine the alignment, you can press control-F6
and tab over to the select time spin box and move the time by
milliseconds.  I usually move by 100 milliseconds each time either
forward or backward to get the sync just right.  After each change in
time, press control-F6 twice to get back to the tracks and again press
alt-t followed by a and c to realign.  Listen to see where you are at
that point. After two or three attempts, you should have it positioned
nicely.
