Hi Ron,

Before I go into the instructions below, practice first on a "dummy" piece of audio you've loaded into Audacity, to get comfortable with the steps.

Also, you can install two different versions of Audacity into two different folders. I have four versions of Audacity installed: 1.2.4, 1.2.6, 1.3.3 beta and a developer-testing 1.3.4 beta:

c:\program files\audacity124 through c:\program files\audacity134.

I mainly write a certain type of plug-in for Audacity, which is the reason for my sometimes unsure way of doing things. Anyways, here goes...

To find out what version you are using, open help menu alt+h, then click on "About Audacity". your screen reader should read what version it is - possibly 1.2.4 or 1.2.6, which are two stable releases of Audacity.

These versions of Audacity are much less screen reader friendly than the 1.3.3 beta. What I would suggest is use the version of Audacity which comes with the turntable to record and then save your lp's, then use the 1.3.3 beta to do your editing.

The following works in both stable and beta versions of Audacity:

home and end keys go to the start and end of your track, respectively.

When you push home, then press your right arrow key a number of times (or hold it down for a few seconds), then press shift+end or shift+home, then press your space bar, you'll hear your track played from the cursor position to the end of the track, or start of the track to your cursor position, respectively.

I'm somewhat rusty here and in somewhat of a rush, so someone else can correct me if I'm wrong.

After you've made your above selection, the control key can be used to contract your selection: control+left arrow contracts your selection by moving the final point of your selection to the left, control+right arrow contracts your selection by moving the start of your selection to the right.

The correct keyboard commands might be control+shift+left or right arrow.

Once you've selected the scratch you referred to in a previous post, press the backspace key to delete the scratch (which would cut that section of audio from the track, which would shorten it. Or if you simply just want to silence that spot, I think there's Silence under the edit menu (do not use Silence under the generate menu, which would simply generate a duration of silence).

Okay, now about 1.3.3 beta. You'll notice your screen reader behaves rather differently - once you've loaded your audio into it you'll hear the name of your file and "select on". Here's where you can use the left and right brackets to select your audio, and there are two ways to do this:

1. Start playing your file using the space bar. About a fraction of a second before your unwanted scratch is heard, press the left bracket key, JAWS will probably read something momentarily. Just after you hear the end of the scratch, press the right bracket key. When you stop playback then start it again with the space bar, you'll hear your selected audio.

2. The other way to select audio is when you don't have anything playing: you simply press the left bracket key, a menu comes up into which you can enter the start time of your selection, and okay that. Then press the right bracket and enter the finishing time of your selection and okay it.

 Cheers

David

 Hi Ron,

Do you know what version of Audacity you are using?

You generally need to select at least some portion of audio before you
apply an effect such as amplify. control+a selects all the audio you have
 loaded.

In the soon-to-be-released 1.3.4, you don't need to select any audio
 before you apply an effect.

 Anything else just shout.
