Hi Matt,
yes, you could create a label where the tape flips over. It would go something
like this:
1. press ctrl+m to create a label in a new label track
2. type a name for the label, for example fred, press enter, then press up
arrow to return to the audio track.
3. After the end of the recording, open the label editor on the tracks menu.
There'll only be one label, and it will be the focus. Press enter to press the
default ok button. The cursor will now be at the label position.

These are some rough notes on using labels in Audacity.
Label tracks can contain both cursor positions and selected time ranges which
have been given a label. Sighted users can use label tracks for creating
labels, moving between then, and editing them. Unfortunately, label tracks are
only partially accessible for users of screen readers. The main problems are
that the names of labels are not read by screen readers, and it's also very
easy to accidentally create labels if a label track is the focus. However users
of screen readers can use labels, if they only use the label track for creating
labels, and also move the focus away from the label track immediately after
creating a label. They can then use the Edit labels dialog to move to a label,
or edit them. Unfortunately the Edit labels dialog is only accessible on
Windows, not Mac or Linux. Creating labels, and using the Edit labels dialog
are described below.
Creating a label, not during playback.
1. Open the tracks menu, and choose Add label at selection (Ctrl+B). If there
isn't already a label track,
then one is automatically added to the project. The label track becomes the
focus.
2. Type in a name for the label, and press Enter.
3. Press up arrow so that an audio track is the focus, rather than the label
track.
Creating a label during playback.
1. Optionally press P to pause.
2. Open the tracks menu, and choose Add label at playback position (Ctrl+M). If
there isn't already a label track, then one is automatically added to the
project. The label track becomes the focus.
3. Type in a name for the label, and press Enter.
4. Press up arrow so that an audio track is the focus, rather than the label
track.
5. If you initially paused, then press P again to resume.
The Edit labels dialog.
This dialog can be used for moving to a label, and editing labels. To open the
dialog, open the tracks menu, and choose edit labels.
The dialog contains a Table, and a number of buttons.
The Table has four columns: Track, label, start time and end time. For each
label in the label track, there's a row in this table. You can navigate and if
necessary edit this table in a similar manner to the table in the metadata
editor. For example, you can press right arrow to move to the label column, and
then press down arrow to move through the names of the labels.
To move the cursor in the main window to a label position, move to that row in
the table, and press Enter to press the default OK button. The dialog closes,
and the cursor is moved to the position of the label.
If you want to remove a label, move to that row in the table, press Ctrl+Tab to
move to the first button after the table, Tab to the Remove button and press
it. Alternatively you can make use of the button's access key, and simply move
to the row in the table and press Alt+R.
If one of the cells in a row is the focus, then you can move to the first
button after the table by pressing Ctrl+Tab.

hay folks.
I've got a tape that I'm trying to record.
the tape deck i use flips the tape over automatically.
is there a way to put a mark when the tape flips over so i can go back,
and delete that silence?
