Hi Jamie,
It isn't that word numbers the pages, it's that my screen reader
announces the page number in order determined by how many page breaks have
been passed. I don't know any way to tell it not to do that. And if I want
to do a good job, I need those page breaks announced. Easier just to get
rid of the soft page breaks and keep a running tally of preliminary pages,
plus pages of text in my head and make sure that matches what I hear word
tell me. Or, I can just forget about that and validate using Kurzweil 1000,
which I generally do anyway after making sure that both programs agree on
the number of pages in a document. Kurzweil allows preliminary pages to be
ignored, essentially, in the page count so that the page numbers match the
page break count unless the scanner didn't do something correctly.

Mayrie, can't you tell Word not to number pages so that you don't get two
sets of page numbers? I don't let Word number pages for me unless I'm typing
a paper that must be numbered.
