I mark as Adult books that have fairly specific sex
scenes, and/or profanity, and/or graphic violence --
book that I think parents might not want young
teenagers to read and books that I'm pretty sure that
some people on this list would not like to read. If
parents want their under-18 children to be able to
read anything they want, they can, I believe, uhnless
I'm wrong, give permission to allow them to download
Adult books. Personally, I think 17 and 18-year-olds
are old enough to read anything, as are mature 15 and
16-year-olds - - but I didn't want my 6th-grade
daughters reading Flowers in the Attic or Clockwork
Orange--probably not even whenthey were 13 or 14.
Also, I know there are adults who are offended or
uncomfortable reading books with profanity and sex. I
don't want them to download a seemingly innocent book
and then come across passages that they didn't want to
read. Sometimes, if I'm not sure a book should be
rated adult because it only has a what I consider mild
profanity but what someone else might object to, I
don't mark the book Adult but I put a warning in the
long synopsis. Likewise, mild forms of torture, as in
Misery.
