No, the junk characters are not the same as scanning errors or typing errors or 
spelling errors found in the hard copy text. Garbled up text and extraneous 
junk characters are not there in the original print. We are 
talking orders of magnitude difference in quantity of errors here. If you start 
scanning books yourself, I think you'll soon discover the difference between 
the typical ocr error, or the junk  character on the one hand, and 
the uncaught typo or spelling error on the other.
