Well,, I choose to call it fabulous, after years of neglect by the previous Volunteer Coordinators in the over four years I've been on this list.

It remains to be determined how much detail willend up in the manual. Over the next three months staff will be partnering with volunteers tocreate entirely new resources while updated existing ones. You may have seenreference to a Bookshare Glossary project and research into "best answers" from years past on the discussion lists. Ellipses, British punctuation, nested tables, and various other recurring mysteries are part of what we plan to address through these and other projects. I apologize for bringing this up again but I do think for the sake of new scanners and proofreaders that the manual should clarify. ----- Original Message ----- From: Mayrie ReNae<mailto:mayrierenae@xxxxxxxxx> To: bksvol-discuss@xxxxxxxxxxxxx<mailto:bksvol-discuss@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Wednesday, May 26, 2010 12:58 PM Subject: [bksvol-discuss] Re: Ellipses Hi Bob and everyone,I have just looked at my copy of the braille transcription manual. It has acopyright date of 1994, so may have changed since. However, it does statethat spaces should appear both before and after an elipsis, except when theelipsis is followed by a punctuation mark, which should follow the elipsis without a space. This formatting was not the case when I learned braille, and I apologize ifmy previous understanding of what was correct and up-to-date has misled anyone. The formatting of a space, three periods without spaces, and another spacedoes not seem to make Bookshare's braille translator barf. Thank goodness!Again, I'm sorry that my early learning of braille and my passing on of thatobviously outdated knowledge has inconvenienced anyone. It's really up to the Braille users since it effects them more.Without further direction, I would put spaces on both sides of the elipsis.Bob ----- Original Message ----- From: EVAN REESE<mailto:mentat3@xxxxxxxxxxx> To: bksvol-discuss@xxxxxxxxxxxxx<mailto:bksvol-discuss@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Wednesday, May 26, 2010 1:39 PM Subject: [bksvol-discuss] Re: Ellipses I think it would look a bit strange if you were to put a space after theellipsis but not before it. So if you're not going to put a space in front, you shouldn't put one after it either. In the latest issue of the Volunteer Manual it states not to place a spacebefore the first dot and to remove all spaces between the three dots, but it does not state what to do after the third dot if the ellipsis occurs in themiddle of a sentence as it often does. Ellipses are frequently used in mid-sentence in dialog, and I want to be sure to handle them correctly. Thanks. Lori C. ________________________________ No virus found in this incoming message.
