Nancy, I never buy new books except as gifts--(ones I've learned about from validating, like What Einstein Told His Cook) and now, since I'm trying not to accumulate any more books in case my husband actually decides to retire and we move (Hah! I should live so long) I try not to buy used books either (working in our Friends used book store I've occasionally given in to temptation, though.) I get all my books from my library.
