Hi Evan,I have had K1000's optimization wizard choos draft quality for text quality quite often. Mostly with kids' books, go figure. I don't think it's too terribly odd. Just to comfort Chela if she is worrying.

Hi, Chela, not E, but that optimization will not work on any book that is about six inches thick and is paperback. Since each book is unique, in terms of it's combination of the size and type of font, contrast, paper quality, and other things I am likely forgetting, you need to optimize each book separately if you want to get the best quality of scan.Incidentally, I have never seen an optimization on a book give text quality as draft. I wonder what causes that. It usually keeps it at normal. But if that's what the optimization resulted in, then you'd best leave it at that, especially since you said it was working much better than the defaults.Front covers rarely scan very well, so you may have to just let it go. Back covers, which usually contain info about the book, often scan better in my experience.Evan ----- Original Message ----- From: "Chela Robles" <cdrobles693@xxxxxxxxx> To: <bksvol-discuss@xxxxxxxxxxxxx> Sent: Wednesday, May 28, 2008 11:33 PM Subject: [bksvol-discuss] Re: Kind of BlueOk I'm feeling pressure already, just started the scan last night, went to bed, sstarted it back up again, ran into some optimization problems, had to restart my PC for some odd reason, so guess what folks, can't garantee it will be done in 10 days, unless I skip meals and no sleep aloud, and GC, I wouldn't be so sure that the captions would scan correctly with the photos situated wherever they're situated. So now I have to redo the scan from page one, and the covers don't scan properly either because of the design work. NOTE TO E.E.: Is the following optimization great for any book, that is probably 6 inches thick and is paperback? Thresholding: static, optimized, scanner brightness 69, minimum brightness 20, maximum brightness 80, resolution 300, speckle removal disabled optimized, text quality draft quality.matrix, and the selected recognition engine is fine reader engine 8.0. What do you suggest? I'm kind of lost. The Orlando Public Library delivers books to people's residences. They prefer it to people checking books out in person in the library. I don't know, but it is a lovely service. devorah -----Original Message----- From: bksvol-discuss-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx [mailto:bksvol-discuss-bounce@xxxxxxxxxxxxx] On Behalf Of Grandma Cindy Sent: Wednesday, May 28, 2008 7:49 PM To: bksvol-discuss@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Subject: [bksvol-discuss] Re: Kind of Blue I think probably Judy or Marilyn or Devorah can do a better job of describing the photos for you, E. I'm never very pleased with mine; they're too detailed sometimes, and lately probably too skimpy. But Chela, are the photos necessary? I'm guessing they're photos of people, like the Ray Charles book I did, and the captions are probably all that's necessary.
