                    Hi Cindy.
Yes, after I dashed off my email I saw his post.

                    Hi.
There is one Kindle only book, well for us anyways. The print copy is only
available in the U.K. It's called A Matter of Pride by Linda Carlino.

As a matter of fact, I did misunderstand your point until I reread your message
right after I sent my reply. Since I do have Bookshare and other sources of
books I have not really payed much attention to Kindle books. Are there really
any Kindle only books? Based on what I have seen without making a point to pay
attention it appears that the Kindle books I have seen on Amazon and mentioned
elsewhere are published in print first and then published as Kindle books. An
exception might be print on demand books. In that case only a very few copies
are printed up as they are ordered, but they still can be ordered in print
versions and undoubtedly used copies show up in used bookstores. There are
enough people around who prefer print copies that I would expect that
publishing print on demand books would continue for the indefinite future. But
then, once everyone comes to prefer ebooks I suppose print books would become
obsolete. I would not expect that to happen for quite a few y
ears though. If it ever does happen then I suppose Bookshare will have to
somehow adapt. Anyway, though, I still ask if there are any Kindle only books
right now. If there are I would expect that they are few in number for right
now.

That's good to know. Bookshare must have an agreement with the publisher of
that book. However, my point was that, unless Bookshare has an agreement with
the publisher of a Kindle only book, then there's no way for the book to be
scanned for the collection. Which means that you could have a growing number of
books from publishers who do not donate to Bookshare, with no way of getting
them into the collection. Up until now, the way things worked was that if you
get ahold of a book, any book, and it wasn't already in the collection, except
for dramatic works, then you could scan it and get it into the collection
regardless of whether or not Bookshare had a relationship with the publisher.
That may no longer be the case. For a Kindle only book, unless I'm missing
something, the only way for it to get into the collection is for Bookshare to
get it from the publisher.

I keep track of the books I am reading at Good Reads. I want to select the
exact edition of the book I am reading, so I usually look it up on Good Reads
by ISBN. If it does not have an ISBN I look it up by title and author and
browse the results until I find the one that most closely matches what I am
reading. One book I downloaded from Bookshare was a publisher quality copy of
Kahawa by Donald E. Westlake. When I entered the ISBN into Good Reads' search
engine I got no results. I then started searching by title and author. When I
browsed the results I found one with a matching ISBN after all. When I looked
at the detail page for the book I was surprised to find out that it was labeled
as a Kindle edition. That tells me that there are already Kindle editions in
the Bookshare collection.

I just encountered my first Kindle only book yesterday. I'm wondering if others
here have seen any of these. With electronic books now outselling hardcovers,
it seems that this may become a growing trend. Why spend all that money on
paper, ink and shipping when you can just send out electronic bits instead for
a lot less money, and more quikly besides?

Why am I posting this here? Because, unless Bookshare has agreements with
publishers, then there's no way for these Kindle only books to get on
Bookshare. So we could be in a situation where an increasing number of books
will be published in a way that will make it impossible for them to be added to
Bookshare. The one I saw said that TTS was enabled, but that is often not the
case with Kindle books in general. So what happens with a Kindle only book with
TTS disabled and there's no print version to scan for Bookshare?

I presume that Bookshare knows about these books, so perhaps I'm worrying over
nothing. I hope so.

Evan
