Hi Mayrie and all,

What I'd very much like to see is a detailed description of the RTF
Converter, Stripper or whatever it is called so that we all know exactly how
to proceed as validators. Right now, in many cases, as Bob Dillon or Peter
Paul and Mary say, the answer, my friend, is blowing in the wind, the answer
is blowing in the wind... :-)

Sorry. I just couldn't resist... :-)

Hi Bob,

You ask good questions. Now, I am going to tell you what's
been said here before. And I know, because I'm as confused as you
are about some things, that there is at least one something that I'm
missing.

Yes, five asterisks above a story heading would be stripped
instead of the story title. That has to do with repetitive
text. I think. And I think the lovely stripper leaves alone the
first line of text on each page, because that isn't repeated,
something it sees again and again, so leaves it alone.

Now, that's all well and good, but, still leaves us with
questions, right? If it strips out repetitive text, it must have a
pretty broad definition of what is repetitive, because it will take
out chapter headings, even if there are two words in the thing, one
being chapter which stays the same (repetitive), and the other, the
number of the chapter (not repetitive). I don't have answers for
this stuff. All that I know are these things, and I think most of
this is learned by experience handed down from volunteer to volunteer.

If you put something above chapter titles or section headings, said
headings will not be stripped. That something can't be blank lines.

Resubmissions of books must either be rescans, or reworkings of
either the originally submitted rtf file, or the validated rtf file
of the book now in the collection. The reason for this is that any
of the editing programs that will handle the daisy files remove
something essential, in the case of Kurzweil, the page numbers. And
the html file will, if used to rework a scan from, have messed up
page breaks, if it has any at all.

It's all a pain, and continually revisited as a topic, because these
things aren't addressed at all in the volunteer manual.

So, Bob, yeah, things suck, but we can, and have to work around them,
or quit. Which I have been tempted to do occasionally. Ah, wouldn't
it be nice if the world always worked the way it is advertised to work.

Peace,
Mayrie
