Bi-polar is a recent term for what used to be called manic-depression or
manic-depressive psychosis. Not all people who suffer from depression are
bi-polar or, for that matter, psychotic. Many people who suffer from
depression are neurotic and can be treated quite well with a totally
different group of drugs or, in some cases, with therapy without drugs
though the length of time involved with such therapy varies. The drugs
involved in both types can facilitate therapy but with bi-polar psychosis
they often work with
without the need of long term, indepth analysis or therapy but are often
needed throughout one's lifetime.
None of these comments are meant as judgemental as in both cases we are
talking about medical and psycological terminology and not moral or ethical
judgements. The concepts of neurosis and psychosis had taken on societal
connotations which were totally invalid but were hard to escape. I write
this in the belief that the perfectionists reading this have escaped those
connotations.
I would.be interested in those working on the Churchill biographies could
tell me from which form the different family members suffered. I had
thought that Winston only suffered from the neurotic form whereas Randolf
had the bi-polar form which included delusions but as I have not read the
biographies I really don't know.

Elizabeth,
I have a certain fascination with M. Churchill, and I think you were right.
He did suffer from deep depression which he called his "black dog." For that reason, he would not stay on a high floor in a hotel, for fear he would jump.
Btw, I just installed Kurzweil, and of course, it isn't right.
Thinking of giving this whole computer system away to a particularly deserving fundamentalist.
Peace,
Ernie

I did not the Churchill diagnosis was bipolar. Thought it was periods of profound depression. Interesting.
Did you include Byron on your list? I forget. Also, Mary Lamb or Charles and Mary Lamb fame lived with bipolar.
