Hi Sue, She won't have to reinsert page breaks after proofreading with the Pac Mate. It doesn't lose them. She will have to go into whatever the dictionary is called though and tell it to speak them. It doesn't speak them out of the box. I haven't done that in a long time, but I believe you do it exactly the same way you do with JAWS, by entering the backslash 12 or whatever the correct number is following the backslash. Sorry to be so vague, but I actually very seldom use my Pac Mate's voice. I almost exclusively use the braille display. Never did figure a way to see page breaks on that unfortunately. But I do know, from reading quite a few rtf files on it, and transferring them back to my PC and looking at them with K1000, that the Pac Mate will not lose the page breaks. Evan You have to go in though and tell the Pac Mate to speak them, just the way you do with JAWS if I recall correctly. But once that is done, she'll ----- Original Message ----- From: Sue Stevens To: bksvol-discuss@xxxxxxxxxxxxx Sent: Tuesday, November 26, 2013 1:57 PM Subject: [bksvol-discuss] Re: Pac Mate question This is innteresting, Evan. But how about page breaks? Will she be able to retain hard page breaks, or will she need to add those when she uploads the file to her computer after proofing? Sue S. But unless they've upgraded the processors in the newer ones, (and if you are not getting one of those newer ones), don't try doing any global search and replace operations. You'll be waiting a long time for it to get done. If it's a long book, then you'll be waiting a really really long time. Is the braille display that attaches to it going to be part of the package? If so, and if you're a braille reader, you'll really like proofreading that way. The Pac Mate has an on-the-fly braille translator in it. It isn't perfect, but it's pretty good. You'll be able to proofread your rtf files in grade 2 braille. It's great. You'll be able to make corrections as you read along. You just have to remember to enter the corrections in computer braille, not grade 2 braille. With a little practice, you'll get the hang of it and it'll become second nature to you. (Actually, come to think of it, you'll need to enter corrections in computer braille even if you're reading without the braille display. If you don't know computer braille, you'll need to learn it to make corrections in the rtf files.) By the way, this is not an OT question. My question is this: Can I proofread the rtf files from the Bookshare check-out list just as it is, or do I need to purchase something else for the Pac Mate? Thanks so much for your suggestions!
